From
"Trying the Twelve Steps:"
"If
you really listen to (not just hear) what is being said,
you may find the person talking has quietly slipped
inside your head and seems to be describing the
landscape there --the shifting shapes of nameless fears,
the color and chill of impending doom -- if not the
actual events and words stored in your brain.
"And
whether this happens or not, you will surely have a good
laugh or two in the company of AA's, and you'll probably
pick up a couple of ideas on living sober."

Sharing
and seeing the “sameness” of our fellow recovering
folks, often brings us into deep friendships.
Having women and men we trust enough to share our
deepest secrets with is one of the many gifts of the
program.
While it's true that most of us already had
friends, we seldom told them everything about ourselves.
We
held back the most intimate details to protect
ourselves.
We
thought if they really knew us, they'd never want to be
our friends.
Our
understanding of friendship has changed since being
introduced to the Twelve Steps.
How
we act as friends has changed too.
Now we know that friends don't judge, they don't
try to control, they accept how other people are, and
they never betray a confidence.
They
listen, they love, and they offer hope.
And they don't run away when they don't like what
they hear.
It
is the perfect love and acceptance that God shows to us
every day of our lives.
He demonstrated this love by sending Jesus to die
in our place for our sins, because God wants us to be
near Him.
“This
is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his
life for us. And
we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
If anyone has material possessions and sees his
brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love
of God be in him? Dear
children, let us not love with words or tongue but with
actions and in truth.
This then is how we know that we belong to the
truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence
whenever our hearts condemn us.
For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows
everything.”
