Step Six --
Excess
STEP
SIX: Is an inner transformation sometimes called
repentance.
STEP
SIX: Were entirely ready to have God remove all these
defects of character.
“Humble
yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
-- James 4:10
"Since
most of us are born with an abundance of natural
desires, it isn't strange that we often let these far
exceed their intended purpose.
When they drive us blindly, or we willfully
demand that they supply us with more satisfactions or
pleasures than are possible or due us, that is the point
at which we depart from the degree of perfection that
God wishes for us here on earth.
That is the measure of our character
defects."

Excess
- definitely our down-fall.
We are all born with the desire for God, which
for many of us fail to recognize until our need for
recovery. Our
society has kicked God out of just about every aspect of
our world, and we are no longer educated at a young age
of who He really is.
Many of us have been taught skewed ideas of God
and that has turned us away. We
begin to fill the desire, the excess void in us with
material things such as sex, drugs, food, work, people,
etc. and when we desire more and more we become addicts.
Until
we reach for God, the true God in the love and
redemption of Jesus Christ, we will never be satisfied.
As we begin this recovery journey, we reach Step Six
that begins the 'new birth' process of removing the
things in our lives that are excessive and destructive,
and replace them with Godly character traits that will
grow us ever closer to Him.
He has begun a good work in us and we will
continue from this point on to walk in His ways, doing
our Step Work to bring us to a point that we are
reflecting the very image of our Savior, Jesus.
With
that hope, to reflect Jesus, we should be running to
this step and asking God to show us those defects.
Psalm
18:31-33 (New International Version)
31
For who is God besides the LORD ?
And who is the Rock except our God?
32
It is God who arms me with strength
and makes my way perfect.
33
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
he enables me to stand on the heights
