JUST FOR TODAY! -- Self-Will
From “More About
Alcoholism”:
"For those who are unable to
drink moderately the question is how to stop altogether.
We are assuming, of course, that the reader desires to
stop. Whether such a person can quit upon a
non-spiritual basis depends upon the extent to which he
has already lost the power to choose whether he will
drink or not. Many of us felt that we had plenty of
character. There was a tremendous urge to cease forever.
Yet we found it impossible. This is the baffling feature
of alcoholism as we know it - this utter inability to
leave it alone, no matter how great the necessity or the
wish.”

Self-will –
the term itself should concern us. The self part is
what got us into trouble in the first place. The will
to stop comes from the power of God – our choices up
until we turned our lives over to Jesus – were poor – we
thought we could drink in moderation – that is where our
self-will let us. We really do want to quit – but we
are weak and by turning it all over to God – we help
ourselves to realize that we do not have the strength to
say know by ourselves. It takes faith – even that of a
small child – to believe we can’t; but Jesus can. Steps
1, 2, 3 critical to the remainder of our recovery
journey.
“Rescue me from my enemies,
O LORD,
for I hide myself in you.
Teach me to do your will,
for you are my God;
may your good Spirit
lead me on level ground.
For your name's sake, O
LORD, preserve my life;
in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.” —
Psalm 143: 9-11
First
Step Prayer
Dear
Lord,
STEP
ONE -- Is about recognizing our brokenness.
I
admitted I was powerless over the effects of my
separation from GOD -- that my life has become
unmanageable.
“I
know nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful
nature. For
I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry
it out.” -- Romans 7:18
I
admit that my life is unmanageable when I try to control
it
Help
me this day to understand the true meaning of
powerlessness
Remove
from me all denial of my dependencies
