Just for Today -- A Daily Devotional

Once we enter into recovery we often fight the spiritual side of the program.  Our perception of “religious folks” is they are weak, they are narrow-minded, and the list goes on.  What we have to realize is that it is not a religion, it is a relationship.  That is right, one on one with God.  He is personal, He loves us, He is forgiving, He is merciful, He is omnipotent and His attributes are way too numerous to list. 

Before recovery, we were slaves to our “drug/behavior” of choice.  We didn’t seem to mind that very much, but in recovery, we do need to become slaves to our God, and for some crazy reason, we fight that. 

By keeping our heads in the clouds with God, we can see the spiritual way so much more clearly, and use the ways of God to walk on this earth.  It is not weak or narrow-mind it is love and peace in our hearts and a desire to remain

drug/alcohol free.

“Don't you realize that whatever you choose to obey becomes your master?  You can choose sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God and receive his approval.  Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you have obeyed with all your heart the new teaching God has given you.  Now you are free from sin, your old master, and you have become slaves to your new master, righteousness.  I speak this way, using the illustration of slaves and masters, because it is easy to understand.  Before, you let yourselves be slaves of impurity and lawlessness.  Now you must choose to be slaves of righteousness so that you will become holy.  In those days, when you were slaves of sin, you weren't concerned with doing what was right.  And what was the result?  It was not good, since now you are ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom.  But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God.  Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life.  For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” -- Romans 6:16-23

STEP TWO: Is about the birth of faith in us.

I  believe that GOD, through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, will restore me to sanity.

“For it is GOD who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.” -- Philippians 2:13.

STEP TWO PRAYER

God, I'm standing at the turning point of my life right now.

I know in my heart that only you can restore me to sanity. 

I humbly ask that you remove all

twisted thought & addictive behavior from me this day.

Heal my spirit & restore in me a clear mind.

Give me your protection and care as I abandon myself to you

and for me to give-up my old ways

and forget my old ideas just for today.

AMEN
