Just For Today -- Step Two -- Higher Power?

STEP TWO: Is about the birth of faith in us.

I  believe that GOD, through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, will restore me to sanity.

“For it is GOD who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.” -- Philippians 2:13.

"You can, if you wish, make AA itself your "higher power."  Here's a very large group of people who have solved their alcohol problem.  In this respect they are certainly a power greater than you, who have not even come close to a solution.  Surely you can have faith in them. Even this minimum of faith will be enough.  You will find many members who have crossed the threshold just this way.  All of them will tell you that, once across, their faith broadened and deepened.  Relieved of the alcohol obsession, their lives unaccountably transformed, they came to believe in a Higher Power, and most of them began to talk of God."

Just for Today -- A Daily Devotional

Technically, the above is correct, but it is not truth.  The intention of a Power greater has always been reliance on the God of the Bible.  Nothing else will work, the group is made up of people, just like you, recovering or working out recovery from an addiction.  As good as they are and has much history they have had, they are still imperfect beings that are still WORKING on their recovery. 

God, Jesus is the only thing that is perfect, all powerful, all knowing, all loving, and all sufficient for you to carry out your recovery plan and walking in His power.  You must remember it is not a religion, it is not a list of beliefs you have to carry, it is a simply one on one relationship with Jesus, acknowledging that you are a sinner, acknowledging the need of a Savior, recognizing that Jesus came to earth, suffered, died and was buried.  Was raised from the dead and is seated at the right hand of God helping us in all matters of life.

When we begin to talk to Him, and receive this little bit of knowledge He has revealed, He will begin to grow you into the perfect creation He intended for you in the beginning.

1 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand.

2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you.  Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

5 and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve.

6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.

8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

9 For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect.  No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.

11 Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. -- I Corinthians 15: 1-11

STEP TWO PRAYER

God, I'm standing at the turning point of my life right now.

I know in my heart that only you can restore me to sanity. 

I humbly ask that you remove all

twisted thought & addictive behavior from me this day.

Heal my spirit & restore in me a clear mind.

Give me your protection and care as I abandon myself to you

and for me to give-up my old ways

and forget my old ideas just for today.

AMEN

Came to Believe

I cried a tear that came from my soul,

The doctor had already told the news,

That, soon I would be dead!

Why me, I screamed, this just can't be,

It must be someone else's fault,

When, to myself, I lied.

Just this one drink and not anymore,

I often was heard to say.

It worked a thousand times before,

So why not on this day?

My soul lay naked, I looked at myself

To see what I had done.

It started out so innocently,

It really looked like fun.

Reliving it now, as I look back,

I see it all was me.

I didn't like the person at all

That I had come to be.

The change came slowly,

one day at a time,

For this I had to pray,

The steps gave me a way of life,

I practice everyday !
