JUST FOR TODAY! -- The Difference

From “Doctor Bob's Nightmare”:

This was a man who had experienced many years of frightful drinking, who had had most all the drunkard's experiences known to man, but who had been cured by the very means I had been trying to employ, that is to say the spiritual approach... 

HE WAS THE FIRST LIVING HUMAN WITH WHOM I HAD EVER TALKED, WHO KNEW WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT IN REGARD TO ALCOHOLISM FROM ACTUAL EXPERIENCE. IN OTHER WORDS, HE TALKED MY LANGUAGE.”

Just for Today -- A Daily Devotional

What is the difference about our recovery groups from the doctors, psychiatrists and counselors?  The difference is that our brothers/sisters in the groups – have walked our walk.  They have experience many years of drinking/using and know and can relate to our pitiful stories of struggle. 

They offer not only empathy – but they can share with us what worked for them, not in condemnation to us, but in desire to help us on our own path towards recovery.  Yes – they talk our language and they point us to the Savior, Jesus – We will be eternally grateful for the difference they have made in our lives. 

“But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.” -- Job 16:5

STEP TWO: Is about the birth of faith in us.

I  believe that GOD, through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, will restore me to sanity.

“For it is GOD who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.” -- Philippians 2:13.

STEP TWO PRAYER

God, I'm standing at the turning point of my life right now.

I know in my heart that only you can restore me to sanity. 

I humbly ask that you remove all

twisted thought & addictive behavior from me this day.

Heal my spirit & restore in me a clear mind.

Give me your protection and care as I abandon myself to you

and for me to give-up my old ways

and forget my old ideas just for today.

AMEN

Came to Believe

I cried a tear that came from my soul,

Please set me free, I said,

The doctor had already told the news,

That, soon I would be dead!

Why me, I screamed, this just can't be,

You know how hard I tried!

It must be someone else's fault,

When, to myself, I lied.

Just this one drink and not anymore,

I often was heard to say.

It worked a thousand times before,

So why not on this day?

My soul lay naked, I looked at myself

To see what I had done.

It started out so innocently,

It really looked like fun.

Reliving it now, as I look back,

I see it all was me.

I didn't like the person at all

That I had come to be.

The change came slowly,

one day at a time,

For this I had to pray,

The steps gave me a way of life,

I practice everyday !
