Just For Today – Step Nine -- Start

STEP NINE  Is the discipline of making amends.

We make direct amends to people wherever possible, except when doing so will injure them or others.

Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar.  First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.  --Matthew 5:23-24

"Most of us begin making certain kinds of direct amends from the day we join Alcoholics Anonymous.  The moment we tell our families that we are really going to try the program, the process has begun."

Just for Today -- A Daily Devotional

The key to working Step Nine -- is to be sincere, be true to ourselves.  Many times in the past we have used those words to our loved ones, our family and friends, but they were shallow words, with no meaning behind them. 

The very start of stating those words could be taken by our loved ones as another shallow promise - they will indeed be hurt - most of the time they have seen too many of these promises not be fulfilled.

Hurt may be the result of our making amends -- but continue to do so, working the recovery program so that our loved ones can see the sincerity of our words, can see the change in our lives and to receive the amends with forgiveness, kindness and understanding that will heal us and heal them and start us onto a sensational relationship that God has always intended us to maintain.

Proverbs 14:8-10 (New International Version)

8 The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways,
 but the folly of fools is deception.

9 Fools mock at making amends for sin,
 but goodwill is found among the upright.

10 Each heart knows its own bitterness,
 and no one else can share its joy.
