Just For Today – Step Nine
-- Timing
STEP
NINE Is the discipline of making amends.
We make direct amends to people wherever
possible, except when doing so will injure them or
others.
“Therefore, if you are offering your gift
at the altar and there remember that your brother has
something against you, leave your gift there in front of
the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother;
then come and offer your gift.” -- Matthew 5:23-24
"As soon as we begin to feel confident in
our new way of life and have begun, by our behavior and
example, to convince those about us that we are indeed
changing for the better, it is usually safe to talk in
complete frankness with those who have been seriously
affected, even those who may be only a little or not at
all aware of what we have done to them. The only
exceptions we will make will be cases where our
disclosure would cause actual harm."

Time is on our side. When our loved ones
see the changed, the new 'us' they will be willing to
listen to what we have to say. Their hearts will be
softer and more open to words coming from us. We must
remember that in the past our words were shallow,
although probably sincere when we promised to change, to
never drink/drug again, et cetera, our actions never
equaled the words.
Now with sobriety and recovery working in
our lives, we are becoming a new creation and for the
most part what we say, we mean, and are actions match
our words.
The key is to allow God's timing in
this. When we do, all will go well. Being frank and
honest can hurt those around us. We should NEVER
approach Step Nine -- with our agenda and checklist -
and to make sure that our souls are cleansed. We must
always work in humility thinking of the other person and
their feelings. We must always remember that our past
actions have hurt others deeply, and we can not practice
Step 9 to cleanse ourselves but always to make our
relationship deeper with our loved ones and mending
those wounds by our honesty and our integrity to
recover, showing success to those we love.
Proverbs 11:16-18 (New International Version)
16
A kindhearted woman gains respect,
but ruthless men gain only wealth.
17
A kind man benefits himself,
but a cruel man brings trouble on himself.
18
The wicked man earns deceptive wages,
but he who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.
